A look at the trends in material selection for the SS22 and FW23 seasons
The trend agency WGSN has revealed the trends in material selection to take into account in the Spring / Summer 2022 and Autumn / Winter 2022/2023 seasons. The main conclusion? A focus on wellness in all its forms, with pieces that make the wearer feel safe and balanced. From innovative fabrics and fabrics to products that cover more than one season, next year's materials highlight a more thoughtful and thoughtful way of shopping, as well as a growing desire for eco-fashion, sustainable practices and the circular economy.
Consumers have high expectations of both new and established
brands, so it's no wonder the industry is moving toward more responsible
sourcing. We have seen an increase in natural plant-based dyes and certified
fibers, as well as the development of more practical garments and a growing
interest in styles that can be worn year-round. FashionUnited deciphers the key
colors, fibers, patterns and materials that will shape 2022.
Colors
Investing in colors that last - that's what next year is all
about. With consumers interested in products that will stand the test of time,
it is necessary to opt for color palettes that can be worn from summer to
winter. The preferred shades? Ecru white, light gray, olive, navy blue and, of
course, black. They will create staples that customers can turn to over and
over again, following their intuition to invest in essentials that won't fade
after a season. Some seasonal colors are still welcome, but appear in a more
curated way: dark red, deep blue, or almond green. Seasonal yes, ephemeral no.
Fibers
WGSN has seen an increase in trends that mix technology and
luxury details, and the fibers associated with this are innovative and
responsible, such as sustainable synthetics like recycled nylon, GOTS certified
cotton and polyester like Econyl. When it comes to outdoor-inspired style,
traceable cashmere and natural fibers like alpaca and wool take the lead. Next
year we will also see the appearance of a new work wardrobe with soft fibers
such as recycled cotton and merino wool. Clothing for work life is largely
influenced by work-from-home practices. Fibers that have been around for
centuries are still the top trends in raw materials, but this time from an
ethical point of view. Hemp, linen and silk now come from fair trade
organizations. Finally, especially soft fibers that have calming properties and
provide comfort will increase, among which are extra-fine merino wool and
cotton and cashmere blends.
Prints
As for the patterns, the usual favorites are still present:
the dyed stripes, the squares, the tartans and the elegant color-blocking . The
"workleisure" trend predicted by WGSN is based on jacquards and
false-plain textures, while the increase in soft fibers results in faded checks
and soft stripes. We will also see bolder prints and patterns in the
collections through embroidery, ombré effects and brushed fabrics in a wide
variety of bright hues.
Materials
The key fabrics of 2022 and early 2023 come in diverse
textures and finishes, providing a wide variety of materials. Tech-oriented
trends will tend to use stretch and breathable options that are lightweight and
often water-repellent, while those focused on the outdoors will choose patterns
such as twill, corduroy, and heavy cottons. On the other hand, the workwear
will be covered in brushed neutrals, jacquards and satin stripes. Finally, we
will also witness many vegan alternatives, from leather to suede, as well as
playful textures such as bouclés, pleats, thousand stripes and squashed pleats.
